Wig & Alternative Hair Care
Beautiful hair
deserves proper care.
Learn how to wash, style and maintain synthetic, heat-friendly and human-hair wigs so your piece stays beautiful for as long as possible.
Start by knowing your fiber
Not every wig should be cared for the same way. Heat-friendly synthetic, traditional synthetic and human hair each have different washing and styling requirements. Choosing the correct guide is the most important first step.

What type of hair do you have?
Heat-Friendly Synthetic
Tru2Life • Kanekalon Excelle
Soft, natural-looking synthetic fibers that can be curled, straightened or blow-dried using controlled low-to-medium heat.
Traditional Synthetic
Kanekalon Flexlite • Kanekalon Vibralite
Lightweight synthetic fibers designed to maintain their original style with minimal daily maintenance.
Human Hair
Certified Remy • Human Hair
The most natural-feeling option with extensive styling flexibility and care similar to color-treated natural hair.
Heat-Friendly Synthetic Care
These fibers can be heat styled, but temperature control and gentle handling are essential.
Before You Begin
- Treat lace-front areas gently. Lace should never be tugged or pulled.
- Avoid sudden bursts of heat, including heat from an oven door.
- Sleeping, showering and swimming while wearing the piece are not recommended.
- For longer styles, gently detangle the nape regularly using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
- Do not use traditional hair color on synthetic fiber.
Step 1 — Pre-Wash
Gently remove tangles using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Do not use a regular brush.
Begin at the ends and slowly work toward the base. Avoid overstretching or pulling the fiber.
Step 2 — Wash & Condition
- Add approximately 1 tablespoon of wig shampoo such as HairUWear Cleanse to a basin of cool water.
- Soak the wig or hairpiece for approximately 3–5 minutes. Do not scrunch or agitate.
- Rinse under cool running water until the water runs clear.
- Use a clean towel to gently press out excess water. Do not twist or wring.
- Apply a light mist of leave-in conditioner such as Restore and gently comb through from the ends upward.
- Allow the wig to air dry on a wig stand.
Step 3 — Styling
Tru2Life and Kanekalon Excelle fibers can be curled, waved, flat-ironed or blow-dried.
Apply a thermal protectant before using heat.
To straighten: Work in approximately 1-inch sections, running the flat iron from the base toward the ends. Allow the section to cool.
To curl: Wrap approximately a 1-inch section around the curling iron. Hold briefly, remove the iron and allow the curl to cool completely in its desired shape.
Step 4 — Maintenance & Storage
- Gently comb through after each wearing using fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
- Use a refreshing spray as needed between washings.
- Store wigs on a wig stand to help prevent unwanted kinks and crimps.
- For wavy or curly textures, refresh with a light mist and finger-style as needed.
- If matting or frizz develops, wash the piece, apply leave-in conditioner and gently detangle from the ends upward.
Traditional Synthetic Care
These fibers are designed to retain their style. Thermal tools should not be used.
Before You Begin
- Handle lace-front areas gently.
- Avoid sudden bursts of heat.
- Do not sleep, shower or swim while wearing.
- Detangle longer styles at the nape regularly.
- Do not use hair color on synthetic fiber.
- Do not use blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, hot rollers or other thermal tools.
Step 1 — Pre-Wash
Gently remove tangles using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.
Start at the ends and slowly work toward the base. Avoid pulling or overstretching the fiber.
Step 2 — Wash & Condition
- Mix wig shampoo with cool water in a wash basin.
- Soak for approximately 3–5 minutes without scrunching or agitating.
- Rinse thoroughly under cool running water.
- Gently press away excess water using a clean towel. Never twist or wring.
- Mist lightly with synthetic leave-in conditioner and gently detangle.
- Air dry on a wig stand.
Step 3 — Styling
Once dry, gently shake the wig to release the fiber and use your fingers to create the desired style.
Products specifically formulated for synthetic wigs may be used as needed.
For wavy or curly styles, refresh the texture with a light mist of water and leave-in conditioner and reshape using your fingers.
Step 4 — Maintenance & Storage
- Gently detangle after each wearing.
- Use refreshing spray between washes as needed.
- Store on a wig stand when not in use.
- Only finger-style dry wavy or curly textures.
- If matting develops, wash, condition and gently detangle beginning at the ends.
Human Hair Care
Human-hair wigs offer the greatest styling flexibility but require careful washing, conditioning and heat control.
Before You Begin
- Human-hair wigs may require washing and styling before their first wear.
- Handle lace-front areas gently.
- Sleeping, showering and swimming while wearing are not recommended.
- Cutting, coloring, perming or other chemical services should be handled by a professional stylist.
Step 1 — Pre-Wash
Gently detangle with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, starting at the ends and working upward.
Avoid pulling or overstretching the hair.
Step 2 — Wash & Condition
- Hold the wig under cool running water, allowing water to flow from roots toward the ends.
- Apply a small amount of shampoo formulated for color-treated hair using a gentle downward motion.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool running water.
- Gently press away excess water. Do not twist or wring.
- Apply conditioner primarily to the lengths and ends—not directly to the base or knots.
- Leave conditioner on briefly, then rinse thoroughly.
- Allow the wig to air dry on an appropriate wig stand.
Step 3 — Styling
Make sure the hair is completely dry before using curling irons or flat irons.
Blow dryers and thermal styling tools may be used on low settings.
Styling products may be used when appropriate. Steam rollers or wet setting can also be gentle options for creating curls.
Step 4 — Maintenance & Storage
- Gently detangle after each wear.
- Store the wig on a wig stand to help maintain shape.
- Use leave-in conditioner between washes when additional detangling or moisture is needed.
- Begin detangling at the ends and work upward.

Remember these
Four simple care rules
Start at the ends
Detangle gently from the ends upward rather than pulling from the base.
Keep it cool
Use cool water for washing and never exceed the heat limit of your specific fiber.
Never wring
Gently press excess water away with a towel instead of twisting the hair.
Store with care
Proper storage helps protect the cap, shape and texture between wears.
